::Motivation and Goals

The year 2011 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the birth of the Brazilian Symposium on Software Engineering. It is also know that throughout its history, the Brazilian community played a major role to the establishment and growth of key Software Engineering areas in the country, in the Latin America, and world wide. Many lessons were learned, while new challenges are emerging with Brazil becoming one of the world's fastest growing major economies. Organizations have increasingly diversified the software development activities they undertake in the country. In the last decade, for instance, Brazil has boosted its production of indigenously-developed software, and Brazilian software companies are becoming increasingly active on a global scale. These changes bring a wide range of opportunities and challenges for Brazilian SE researchers and practitioners, which can be applicable, to some extent, to other BRIC and developing countries.

In this context, the goal of this special issue is to put together a collection of papers that present both examples of outstanding research contributions and well-described views about the past, present and future of the Brazilian Software Engineering research. In particular, the special issue will serve as a reference for researchers, practitioners and educators to understand the most recent innovations, trends, experiences and concerns involving the Brazilian Software Engineering research and development. Then, the issue will also address the current "fragmentation" of the knowledge about the progress of Software Engineering in Brazil.

 

::Scope and Topics Covered

This special issue is intended to revisit the SE challenges and directions in Brazil after 25 years the first edition of the Brazilian Software Engineering Symposium was held. We are soliciting high-quality submissions that describe both retrospective and prospective views. The submissions could also present interesting perspectives about the impact of Software Engineering (SE) in Brazil as well as identify key SE research challenges for the future. Some examples of topics to be addressed are (but not limited to):
  • a broader assessment of the state of the art in Brazilian SE research and/or development
  • a retrospective of 25 years about specific SE research themes in Brazil
  • visionary research topics for contemporary SE, e.g. definition of challenges for the development of next-generation software systems
  • a review of the industry-university collaboration in Brazil
  • industrial perspectives of SE in Brazil
  • a reflective report about the emergence and establishment of SE undergrad courses in Brazilian universities
  • a review of the impact of the SE research in the international landscape
  • identification of gaps and directions for the Brazilian SE research in the future

 

::Submission Procedure

Submissions should follow the guidelines set out by JSS website. Prospective authors should submit high quality, original manuscripts that have not appeared, nor are under consideration, in any other journals. The submission page for this special issue is located at the journal website: http://ees.elsevier.com/jss/default.asp To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified for inclusion into the special issue, it is important that you select "Special issue: Software Eng. in Brazil" when reaching the "Article Type" step in the submission process. This article type will be opened to the authors by last week of November 2011 only.

 

::Referring and Selection Process

All papers will undergo an anonymous peer referring process. Each paper will be evaluated by at least three referees with expertise and strong background in the areas of the submitted papers. The referring process will be guided by a comprehensive selection criteria with which the submitted papers will be judged, including: (i) relevance to the JSS readership, (ii) originality, (iii) presentation, (iv) technical soundness, (v) contribution degree to the state-of-the-art on software engineering, and (vi) relevance to the special issue theme. Only papers of clear archival quality will be accepted. The choice of the papers will be also driven by the desire to cover different areas relevant to this special issue with the maximum breadth, while maintaining the utmost quality.
